Review: A Long Walk to Water

A Long Walk to Water: Based on a True Story

Hiya!

I'm here to review A Long Walk to Water (★★★☆) by Linda Sue Park, which I read basically in 1 day. My son, who's in 5th grade, is reading this with his class right now. They read a chapter every day, and he got to a very tense and suspenseful part of the story that he wanted to talk to me about, so I caught up to where he was reading. Of course, I can't help myself, so I finished the book this morning!

I really did like this book. It was based on a true story about The Lost Boys of Sudan. Obviously, I can't say that I enjoyed the story, as this was a terrible situation that these people lived through. However, the author definitely did her research. One of the main characters, Salva, was extremely closely based on a real-life Salva Dut, who worked with the author to tell his story.

I loved the dual-perspective that was used to show what was happening in the regions of Sudan, Ethiopia and surrounding areas during the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. It was really helpful to see the whole situation from not only 2 separate times, but also 2 separate perspectives of how a severe drought and a civil war affected the people.

Obviously this was just a quick little read, but I'm really happy that I read it.

O.W.L.s readathon: Finished 2/12
Believathon: Finished 0/5
Popsugar Reading Challenge: 2/50

Currently reading: A Pinch of Magic
